Autumn is the time of year when we all start to bundle up, preparing for the cold weather that is about to come. It is essential that we pay close attention to our skincare regimen. Here at Georgetown Aveda we have several tips that will help keep your skin looking smooth, glowing and rosy.
1. Pay Attention to Changes
When the weather changes, the skin seems to follow. Many people who are used to their oily skin will now see normal or combination skin and people who have normal skin will start to see a few dry patches emerge. Rememeber, you should not use the same products year round. Just as you change the clothes you wear to protect yourself from the changing weather, you must also change your skin care products to protect your skin. Move towards products containing creamier, richer ingredients to help hydrate and nourish the skin. Come in to Georgetown Aveda for a consultation and facial for some advice on how to help your skin combat these dry, cold months of the year.
2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
Remember this rhyme, “To keep rough skin away, moisturize everyday!” The most common problem we all face in the winter is combating our dry skin. The best way to keep the flakes away is to keep the skin constantly hydrated. Use a creamy body and face wash instead of the gel products more commonly used in warmer weather. The best way to apply your moisturizer on both your face and body is directly after you have dried off from the shower so that you can seal in the moisture that has been absorbed from your hot shower. Try to use facial moisturizer with SPF in the morning, and a thicker, richer cream at night to help rejuvinate and repair the skin while you are sleeping. For the body, try to put a thick lotion on every evening when you are going to bed. Come in and pick up a bottle of the Caribbean Therapy Body Cream, containing shea butter, a great hydrator. The exotic smell will help take you on a vacation from the cold weather.
3. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen
Although you are no longer laying in the sand soaking up the sun, our skin is still easily affected by the sun’s rays. Many people forget about SPF once the weather starts to get cold, but it is especially important to remember to wear some form of SPF every day. Come in and pick up a tube of our Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 to help keep you protected as well as looking good throughout the day. Its a great idea to protect your skin, but dont avoid the sun! Go out, take a walk and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery, plus your body needs the Vitamin D!
4. Keep a Routine
You can apply as many products as you like to your skin, but in order to keep your skin as healthy as possible it is important to stick with a regular routine. The body needs constant maintence to keep it staying beautiful and healhty well. But with work and school to attend, kids to pick up, friends to meet, pets to take care of, and all the other daily tasks one must complete, skin care can easily be put on the back burner. So instead of constantly thinking about how you should be doing this or that with your skin, try to take twenty minutes of your time today to think of what your skin needs to stay healthy and when the best time would be for you to do your daily, weekly and/or monthly routine.
Of course it is vital to cleanse and moisturize the skin everyday, twice a day, but keep in mind the extra steps like exfoliating, toning, skin brushing, masks, and facials. Try to ask yourself what your skin really needs, and when you can realistically fit each task into your routine. Once you have a regular schedule of, say, a mask on Sunday, exfoliating treatment Tuesday and Friday, and a facial the first Monday of every month, it will turn your routine worry free.
