Winter Skin Care

Esthetician Devin Owens

Author: Devin Owens | Esthetician at Georgetown Aveda

Winter months can be very harsh on our skin and just as we change our clothes during the different seasons, we also need to adjust our skin care regimen.

Here are several great winter skincare tips:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Exfoliate up to 3 times per week with a gentle exfoliant such as Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant
  • Use oil-based moisturizers, but be aware that not all oils are beneficial for your skin. We recommend non-clogging oils such as: almond, coconut, avocado and mineral oils. These serve as a protective layer against harsh environmental conditions.
  • Use broad-spectrum SPF daily by applying it 30 minutes prior to sun exposure
  • Avoid alcohol-based toners and astringents
  • Be sure to moisturize day and night

Here is what we recommend for different skin types:

Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser

Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser

Contains Jojoba exfoliating beads which are beneficial during the cold months. Jojoba mimics the skin’s natural oils which helps maintain healthy moisture levels.

Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser

Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant

This exfoliant gently dissolves dead cells leaving the skin smooth and clean.

Tourmaline charged hydrating cremeTourmaline Charged Hydrating Cream

This product contains powdered Tourmaline mixed with marine and plant extracts as well as 11 different anti-oxidants. It keeps the skin hydrated, it protects it from harsh environments, and it leaves it radiantly glowing.

For this skin type we recommend applying a lotion instead of creams because lotions are lighter in texture.

Skin Care Tips for the Changing Seasons

Autumn is the time of year when we all start to bundle up, preparing for the cold weather that is about to come. It is essential that we pay close attention to our skincare regimen. Here at Georgetown Aveda we have several tips that will help keep your skin looking smooth, glowing and rosy.

1. Pay Attention to Changes

When the weather changes, the skin seems to follow. Many people who are used to their oily skin will now see normal or combination skin and people who have normal skin will start to see a few dry patches emerge. Rememeber, you should not use the same products year round. Just as you change the clothes you wear to protect yourself from the changing weather, you must also change your skin care products to protect your skin. Move towards products containing creamier, richer ingredients to help hydrate and nourish the skin. Come in to Georgetown Aveda for a consultation and facial for some advice on how to help your skin combat these dry, cold months of the year.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

Remember this rhyme, “To keep rough skin away, moisturize everyday!” The most common problem we all face in the winter is combating our dry skin. The best way to keep the flakes away is to keep the skin constantly hydrated. Use a creamy body and face wash instead of the gel products more commonly used in warmer weather. The best way to apply your moisturizer on both your face and body is directly after you have dried off from the shower so that you can seal in the moisture that has been absorbed from your hot shower. Try to use facial moisturizer with SPF in the morning, and a thicker, richer cream at night to help rejuvinate and repair the skin while you are sleeping. For the body, try to put a thick lotion on every evening when you are going to bed. Come in and pick up a bottle of the Caribbean Therapy Body Cream, containing shea butter, a great hydrator. The exotic smell will help take you on a vacation from the cold weather.

3. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

Although you are no longer laying in the sand soaking up the sun, our skin is still easily affected by the sun’s rays. Many people forget about SPF once the weather starts to get cold, but it is especially important to remember to wear some form of SPF every day. Come in and pick up a tube of our Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 to help keep you protected as well as looking good throughout the day. Its a great idea to protect your skin, but dont avoid the sun! Go out, take a walk and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery, plus your body needs the Vitamin D!

4. Keep a Routine

You can apply as many products as you like to your skin, but in order to keep your skin as healthy as possible it is important to stick with a regular routine. The body needs constant maintence to keep it staying beautiful and healhty well. But with work and school to attend, kids to pick up, friends to meet, pets to take care of, and all the other daily tasks one must complete, skin care can easily be put on the back burner.  So instead of constantly thinking about how you should be doing this or that with your skin, try to take twenty minutes of your time today to think of what your skin needs to stay healthy and when the best time would be for you to do your daily, weekly and/or monthly routine.

Of course it is vital to cleanse and moisturize the skin everyday, twice a day, but keep in mind the extra steps like exfoliating, toning, skin brushing, masks, and facials. Try to ask yourself what your skin really needs, and when you can realistically fit each task into your routine. Once you have a regular schedule of, say, a mask on Sunday, exfoliating treatment Tuesday and Friday, and a facial the first Monday of every month, it will turn your routine worry free. So get away from the cold and come on in to Georgetown Aveda. We can pour you a cup of tea while you are browsing all the products you need to pamper yourself. There are always estheticians on staff to provide you with any service you are looking for. We looking forward to seeing you soon!

Aveda’s Holistic Approach to Microdermabrasion

The Tourmaline Charged Skin Refiner is Aveda’s alternative to microdermabrasion. It is an exfoliating facial scrub with creamy texture. Formulated with extracts of bamboo and tourmaline in powder form, this product successfully removes skin-clogging and skin-dulling cells. The result is a smoother, more radiant skin with improved complexion and no redness and irritation.

These results are achieved by your esthetician’s mechanical action and manipulation of the product  on the skin. Although Tourmaline Charged Skin Refiner may not be suitable for every skin, talk to your esthetician and he/she will determine whether it will be beneficial for you.

How is it different form other refiners?

Tourmaline – this formula contains powdered Tourmaline, a naturally energizing mineral that amplifies the performance of other ingredients.
Bamboo – removes the dull skin cells during the mechanical process of exfoliation.
Clary Sage – aids in increasing the cell turnover process
Sucrose – acts as an anti-irritant

Other beneficial ingredients – Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Lycopene, Glyceryn and Sodium Hyaluronate ( moisturizing properties ).
