henna

Henna is a natural formulation that has been used for over 3000 years as a stain for the hair, body, nails and lips. Today, most salons rarely use henna.

What is henna?
It is a product derived from the henna shrub. Various parts of the shrub are used for different color results.

The powdered material is then mixed with hot water to form a paste. Using hot water is essential and it facilitates the absorption.

Lawstone, the main ingredient of henna, binds to keratin (the structural protein of the hair, skin and nails) and this bond is permanent.

Important Henna Features:
1. Henna will not lighten natural hair color.
2. Pure hennas create an orange-red to brown-red color.
3. During the henna manufacturing process, additional ingredients are normally added to broaden the selection of colors, offering colors ranging from black to strawberry blonde.

Compound Henna Precautions:
Compound henna is a mixture of henna and metallic salts (lead acetate).
Although its usage is obsolete, if you have applied it in your hair, it is important to mention this to your stylists. The metallic salts are not compatible with most modern hair color or re-texturizing products.

Salon color and highlights applied to hair that has been treated with henna may results in uneven color throughout the strand.

Refrain from using henna if:
1. If you are considering using color other than henna in the near future.
2. If you are planning to have your hair permed or relaxed.
3. If you have more than 15% grey hair because henna may appear unnatural and excessively vivid when applied on grey hair.

Here at Aveda Georgetown we do not offer henna coloring. We encourage out guests to consult with their stylists if they are booked for a coloring service and have used henna in the past.

waxing

When it comes to hair removal, every esthetician’s goal is to provide the safest and best waxing/threading experience possible.

Every waxing service starts with a consultation during which the esthetician makes sure that waxing will be safe for the skin. Some people are more sensitive than others, however there are contraindications that apply to any skin type. Most commonly, these are prescription medications, acne medications and certain medical conditions.

1. Retin-A (acne medication)

Retin-A is an effective acne prescription medication. However some people experience irritation, dryness and flaking. It is best for waxing to be performed about 2-3 weeks after the last Retin-A application.

2. Accutane (acne medication)
Accutane is another powerful acne medication. It is a form of Vitamin A that reduces oil production and thus it effectively treats acne. Due to the medicine’s side effects, it is advised that you are off Accutane for one year before having your skin waxed.

3. Azelex (acne medication)

Azelex is a medication that is used to treat rosacea and acne. Although most people do not experience serious side effects, some feel irritation, itching and tingling. Waxing is not recommended if there are side effects.

4. Tazorac (acne medication)

Although side effects are not likely, if they are present, they may consist of skin itching, burning sensation, stinging and peeling.

5. Adapalene (acne medication)

Similarly to other acne medications, Adapalene may cause redness, scaling, dryness and burning sensation.

6. Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is used as a skin whitener. Its side effects include skin irritation, stinging, itching.

What else is important to mention to your esthetician?

  • recent usage of products that contain salicylic acid, AHA or BHA
  • usage of steroid creams or steroid medications in the last 3 months
  • if you have sunburn, heat allergies,  irritation or hyper-sensitivity
  • any skin disorders and conditions such as psoriasis, ringworm, eczema etc.
  • previous reactions to waxing
  • anything else that you think may affect your skin during the service

Redness and irritation are common for some people after waxing and disappear after a day or two. Others experience no skin changes at all. That is why it is important to mention any of the conditions listed above. All information we collect is confidential and in the event that waxing is not suitable, we may offer threading.

One of the services that has gained popularity is lash extensions. During the procedure, the esthetician attaches individual lashes to your own in a precise manner that results in beautiful, thick and long lashes with a natural appearance. The duration is about an hour, to hour and and half, and the cost for a full application is $200. Touchups are recommended about once a month, however this varied with the individual. The fill-in service is $50-$75 depending on how many lashes are needed.

Follow these tips in order to keep your lashes looking beautiful for a longer period of time:

  1. Allow 3 hours for the glue to dry
  2. Avoid getting the lashes wet
  3. Avoid taking a shower for the first 8 hours
  4. Avoid saunas or steam rooms for the first 48 hours to allow the glue to cure
  5. When washing your face do not rub against the extensions
  6. Avoid using mascara, especially water-proof one
  7. Do not let shower water directly hit the lashes
  8. Avoid lash curlers

If you have more questions about the aftercare of lash extensions, send us an e-mail at: contactus@avedageorgetown.com or leave a comment.
